3-Day Excursion from Marrakech to the Merzouga Desert

This excursion is easily one of the most popular. It’s a journey from Marrakech to Merzouga that offers plenty of discoveries. Along the way, you’ll encounter oases, sand dunes, kasbahs, camel rides, and an overnight stay in a camp in the heart of the Sahara, where you and your private group can marvel at the endless starry sky. With no light pollution to interfere with your stargazing in your desert camp, the sunset you’ll witness during the camel ride is equally breathtaking.

Day 1: Marrakech – Atlas Mountains – Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah – Boumalne Dades Valley

On this exciting excursion through the eastern half of Morocco, you’ll travel in style in a modern, air-conditioned minibus. Our guide will pick you up from your hotel in Marrakech at 7:15 a.m. and take you to the starting point. We will cross the Atlas Mountains and descend to the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou.

The Kasbah (there are actually six within a fortified town) is a marvelous place. Here, you’ll almost feel as if you’ve been transported back to the time of gladiators, desert nomads, and ancient trade markets. Lunch on the first day will be at the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou after a guided tour.

Our next stop for the day will be in Ouarzazate. We will admire the scenery of a city where many blockbuster films have been shot. Classics like The Mummy and Lawrence of Arabia are among the many movies filmed in this city, often referred to as “The Gateway to the Desert.”

In this gateway city, we can take a break at a café before venturing into the Dades Valley. Once there, you can relax in a private guesthouse in Dades with an en-suite bathroom and savor the culinary delights of a Moroccan dinner.

Day 2: Boumalne Dades Valley – Tinghir – Todra Gorges – Merzouga

The next morning, we’ll enjoy a hearty breakfast at our guesthouse before setting off for the Todra Gorges. The Todra Gorges are simply breathtaking, offering stunning scenery that will leave you wondering why this hasn’t been listed as one of the wonders of the world. After lunch on the second day, we will head to Merzouga.

Overnight in a Desert Camp

Merzouga is truly a place deep in the heart of the desert. Here, we will mount our camels and cross the dunes of Erg Chebbi to reach the Berber camp where we will spend the night. At the desert camp, you’ll enjoy an evening meal and breakfast the following morning before we begin our final day’s journey back to Marrakech.

Day 3: Merzouga – Ouarzazate – Atlas Mountains – Marrakech (9 hours of driving)

Our camels will take us back to Merzouga, and then we’ll drive through the Draa Valley, where we’ll see the sights in Rissani. Here, the Moroccan architecture of palaces, gates, and temples provides many photo opportunities.

The final leg of this excursion will take us through Nqob and then Tamnougalt before reaching the familiar city of Ouarzazate. Lunch can be enjoyed at any café before we continue our journey through the Atlas Mountains back to Marrakech, where our trip will come to an end. Arrival in Marrakech is expected around 8:00 PM.
